LOTR Slot Review

Back in September 2010, Microgaming ("MG") released their first in a trilogy of Lord Of The Rings slots. It had it's critics but the combination of free spins and stacked wilds ultimately made it popular. In September 2011, for reasons that are unclear, MG decided to re-model the game featuring 4 progressive jackpots and new features replacing some of the old ones.

Out went the Eye Of Sauron wild reel and random wild reels in the free spins, in came Gollum's random features. Out went a 3x free spin muliplier and in came a 2x multiplier with random additions up to x5. And of course, in came progressive jackpots of over $1,000,000. So did this re-modelling work?

If you want my opinion: no. While the new graphics, video and animations are superb, the gameplay has taken a real hit. It's a slot game built almost solely for entertainment while the previous version, dubbed "Fellowship of the Ring", had a balance that was fairly well worked out - although not as perfect as slots like the golden oldie Thunderstruck.

The free spin bonus is the most disappointing aspect. The wild reels gave rise to some nice and reasonably frequent hits in the original Fellowship slot. So far I haven't had a bonus that exceeed 9x my stake! In fact, in all the time of been testing the new Lord Of The Rings out (some 500 spins so far) I haven't had over 17x back...including feature hits.

I think Microgaming have made another mistake too - by having such a huge gap in reward between the 2nd and 3rd progressive jackpots they just don't incentivise you to play. The 3rd and 4th levels are psychologically out of reach while the first 2 levels aren't even worth getting out of bed for IMO.

Bottom line is, the Lord Of The Rings slot is lovely to look at, fun to play until the novelty wears off but after that, I can't see it sticking on my frequently visited games list myself. There are far better slots here at Slotjunkies both by Microgaming and other providers which balance entertainment and winning.
