One of the latest Novomatic slots to come online is the excellent Katana slot with it's expanding wild symbols during the free spins feature (see the video above) which has been released to Star Games and Sky Vegas. It's actually Novomatic's Shogun slot machine in disguise - a slot that you may have seen in land casinos but due to online licensing issues, the game has been renamed Katana. This was a problem also faced by WMS when they wanted to bring their popular Bruce Lee slot online - they had to change Bruce to a Dragon and call it Game Of Dragons II, although WMS have since resolved that issue.

Interestingly, since Katana appeared online I have also seen it in land-based - and I don't mean as "Shogun" but actually as Katana. What's more, thereis one fundamental difference that must make the land based Katan slot machine higher variance than the online version I would have thoght: you get 15 free spins instead of the 10 found in teh online version's feature. What I can tell you is that when I played the land-based version at Aspers casino in East London, it ate my bankroll like money was going out of fashion!

Novomatic's most famous slot game is Book Of Ra (and the sequel, Book Of Ra Deluxe) which is still probably my favourite, but Katana is a very good option when Ra is feeling greedy. The feature is triggered by getting 3 scatters - which actually is no easy task - but with the expanding wilds in the free spins I've had some very decent hits from Katana. When you compare the Novomatic games to recent video slots from providers like Playtech and Microgaming then there is definitely more of a dated feel but in my opinion this actually gives the game some of it's appeal. Well worth a play at the online casinos listed here when you get the inclination.

Like Book Of Ra, Katana is a relatively high variance slot game (high risk) so it pays to play it carefully. The bonus feature is where Katana is likely to pay you back and like most Novomatic video slots it's fairly hard to trigger. However if, like me, you prefer high variance games, have a look at Microgaming's Break Da Bank Again slot and one of my personal favorites, the Isis slot.
